Pleasant River Lumber Takes Dimension Graders Competition
(More news)For the first time in the five-year history of the NELMA Dimension Graders Competition, Pleasant River Lumber of Dover-Foxcroft, Maine takes top team and individual awards. A total of 19 graders from 4 of NELMA’s Dimension-class mills participated in this year’s event, hosted by Fontaine Lumber’s Stratton, Maine mill facility on August 25. This end-of-summer rite challenges lumber graders to correctly identify the grade of 50 lumber samples in a five minute time limit. In the meantime, a group “quiz-time” is conducted by NELMA Inspectors to further the fun and camaraderie enjoyed at the event.
A total of $625 was distributed to the top 8 finishers in this year’s competition. They were:
1. Tim Gravelle, Pleasant River Lumber
2. Alan Lemaire, Moose River Lumber
3. Tom Wellington, Pleasant River Lumber
4. Johnathan Brault, Fontaine Inc.
5. Jean-Pierre Blais, Fontaine Inc.
6. Denis Roy, Fontaine Inc.
7. Benoit Guilaume Tissot, Fontaine, Inc.
8. Shawn Lyon, Pleasant River Lumber
Fontaine Inc. finished in second place behind Pleasant River’s top team finish, followed closely by Moose River Lumber in third place. The traveling “Bronze Hammer” trophy will reside at Pleasant River until next summer’s contest, at a location to be announced.
“These competitions serve as an excellent training opportunity for individuals of all experience levels”, noted Marc Moore, NELMA’s Director of Inspection Services, “and provides graders with a unique, informal atmosphere to interact with their peers from other mills and with the Association’s Inspection staff, enhancing their overall lumber grading profession experience.”
NELMA would like to especially thank Fontaine Inc. and Stratton Lumber management and personnel for their superb hospitality as hosts of the 2007 event!
