Supplement No. 1 to Standard Grading Rules for Northeastern Lumber Now Available

(More news)

The NELMA and ALSC approved revisions to Paragraphs 6.0, 6.2.2, 6.2.3, 6.2.4, and 6.3 of Section 3 for Eastern White Pine within the NELMA Standard Grading Rules for Northeastern Lumber are now in effect, as of June 15, 2008. Supplement No. 1 has been published by the Association and was mailed in June to the lumber manufacturing and wholesaler/broker members of the organization. NELMA’s Inspection staff will be educating and training certified graders at each member mill during their regular inspection visits.

As previously noted in the June issue of AskNELMA, these revisions make no changes in the provisions of the Rule EXCEPT to define decay allowances with the intent to eliminate any reference to “Unsound Wood” as written in the rules due to the confusion between incipient decay and advanced decay. The changes are not meant to significantly alter the limitations of decay, but to simplify the teaching and application of the decay limitations for the Eastern White Pine grades.

Additional copies of Supplement No. 1 are available free of charge from NELMA. Contact us by phone (207-829-6901), fax (207-829-4293) or email (info@nelma.org) to request one or more copies.
