NELMA’s 10th annual competition for graders of dimension lumber was held Saturday, June 9 at Stratton Lumber Company’s facility in Stratton, Maine. This year’s event drew the largest delegation of dimension graders since the competition began, with 28 graders from Quebec and Maine in attendance for the half-day of activities. Participants vied for one of the top 5 individual awards, sharing $650 in prize money, in addition to an added bonus, mini-grading competition round of the top 5 for an added $100 award. The coveted “Bronze Hammer” trophy was also in play for team bragging rights for a year.
Tallying the most correctly-graded boards of the 50 pieces and taking first place was Jean-Pierre Blais of Fontaine, followed closely by Craig MacAlister of Pleasant River Lumber for Second Place. Josh Farnsworth and Ruben Campbell, both of Stratton Lumber finished in Third and Fourth Place respectively, with Denis Roy of Fontaine rounding out the Top 5 Graders for 2012.
Mr. Blais’ top place finish helped Fontaine squeak out a one-point win for the team title over second place finishers, Stratton Lumber and Pleasant River Lumber. This was Fontaine’s fourth title in the ten year period of the competition.
