NELMA Returns to York Harbor for 2012 Fall Meeting

CNCC_Sign_-_Golf_2012York Harbor, Maine served as host location for NELMA’s 2012 Fall Golf Outing and Board of Directors Meeting, held September 20 and 21.  Members and guests numbered 120 for the 2-day event that began with the annual golf scramble at the historic Cape Neddick Country Club.  A perfect New England early fall day greeted 77 golfers for the tournament.  Taking 1st place for Low Net Score was the foursome of Doug Chiasson (J.D. Irving), Jeff Desjardins (Moose River Lumber), Tom Jenkins (Green Light Forest Products), and Phil Ruck (CES Inc.).  The Low Gross Score 1st place went to the team ofBob Bronkie (Unstable Farm), Dante Diorio (Diorio Forest Products) and Rob Wieczorek (Wieczorek Insurance).  The Putting Contest required a “Putt-Off” between Tom Jenkins (Green Light Forest Products) and B. Manning (Durgin & Crowell), with Tom Jenkins taking top prize.  All awards were presented at the evening Chairman’s Dinner by NELMA’s Golf Awards Co-Chairmen, Matt Duprey (Hancock Lumber) and Jason Brochu (Pleasant River Lumber).

The NELMA Board of Directors convened the following morning to discuss Association business and hear updates from selected speakers on specific industry issues.  Agenda topics for discussion included the latest information on NELMA’s Inspection Programs that included lumber, wood packaging for export, wood pellets, and the 9Bloc pallet program.  Reports from Committees that had met since the April Board meeting included the Pine Subcommittee, the Grading Committee, and the Advisory Committee.  Actions from the Pine and Grading Committee meetings brought to the Board included a recommendation to adopt revisions for the Eastern White Pine grading rules and Interpretations.  The Board approved the recommended Interpretation revisions but sent the requested change to Premium Grade’s Black Knot rule back to both groups for grade impact studies before approval.

Additional business included a review of the 2012 Association finances and approval of the proposed 2013 budget.  The latest information on the overall lumber testing and design value monitoring was provided, along with upcoming NELMA testing program plans.

Issue updates were provided by the following guest speakers: Paul Jannke (FEA) on Fiber Supply Across North America as Lumber Markets Improve; Softwood Lumber Agreement Status and Future Plans by Zoltan van Heyningen (U.S. Lumber Coalition); Phil Ruck (CES) on Environmental Regulation Updates; and Alden Robbins (Robbins Lumber and Softwood Lumber Board member) on the latest activities under the Lumber “Check-Off” program.

At the meeting, Jeff Easterling announced the retirement of Marc Moore, NELMA’s Director of Inspection Services, and Ed Hayes, NELMA Inspector, both effective December 31, 2012.  Replacing Marc Moore will be Matt Pomeroy of NELMA’s current Inspection staff, which will require the replacement of two Inspector positions in the coming months.

NELMA’s 2013 Annual Convention is slated for April 4 & 5 in Boston at the Marriott Long Wharf Hotel.  This event will mark the 80th Anniversary of the Association where special celebration activities will be conducted to commemorate this important milestone.
