Stratton Lumber Takes Bronze Hammer at Dimension Graders Competition
A total of 28 dimension lumber graders representing 5 NELMA mills descended upon Jackman, Maine on June 15 to participate in the 11th annual competition, hosted by Moose River Lumber. The program format remained the same, with each grader tasked with identifying the grade of 50 pre-selected boards followed by a “bonus” round of grading 10 additional boards by the top 5 finalists. The number of graders that competed in this year’s event matched the record number set at last year’s competition.
Both individual and team awards were at stake with cash prizes totaling $750 distributed to the top 5 finishers, in addition to a $100 award given to the best grader in the “Bonus” round. Individually, 1st place went to Adam Ramsey of Milan Lumber who set a Dimension competition record by correctly grading 40 of the 50 boards. The remaining top 5 places, in order, went to Greg Silver of Stratton Lumber, Donnie Beedy of Stratton Lumber, Denis Roy of Fontaine Inc., and Jean-Pierre Blais of Fontaine, Inc. The “Bonus” round winner was Donnie Beedy of Stratton Lumber who correctly graded 8 of the 10 boards.
For the 3rd time in 5 years (4th overall), Stratton Lumber took the Bronze Hammer team trophy, placing 5 graders within the top 10 finishers and a team score of 76. In Second Place, Milan Lumber (70), followed by Fontaine Inc. (69) in Third Place.
On behalf of all the Dimension mill participants, NELMA would like to thank Moose River Lumber for their generous hospitality as hosts for this year’s Dimension Graders Competition.
