Do you know where your wood came from? One of the best ways to be sure that the lumber that goes into your project was legally and sustainably sourced is to choose products from mills that are SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative) certified. Many NeLMA member mills have gotten their certification over the last decade, giving consumers a third-party stamp of approval on wood products like Eastern White Pine. One of those mills is King Forest Industries, a trusted source of wood in New Hampshire for nearly four decades.

With a mission to produce the finest quality specialty wood products on the market, King Forest Industries puts the focus on quality, and that has meant making sure its wood is sourced in a way that supports the future of healthy, renewable working forests.

Our commitment to sustainable forestry is evident in every aspect of our business. In January of 2012 King Forest succeeded in becoming SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative®) fiber sourcing certified to show our seriousness to the commitment to sustainability.”

“As part of our commitment to SFI, we have been educating our employees, the community, land owners and our log suppliers in the importance of forest sustainability and what it means for our future. We limit our log purchases to loggers and suppliers who are also forest conscious and have committed to using BMP’s (Best Management Practices) and responsible logging. We require our log suppliers to be PLP (Professional Logging Professionals) certified or in the process of being certified.”

King Forest Industries, Inc. produces 25-30 million board feet per year of Eastern White Pine lumber, with a sawmill that’s been designed with re-saw options that allow a high rate of production of many different products including 4/4 through 8/4 NELMA-grade boards in all popular patterns. The sawdust that the sawmill produces is burned in a co-gen plant to produce steam for the kilns. “We are continuously striving to make our business more eco-friendly,” says the company.

The internationally recognized Sustainable Forestry Initiative program provides certification for over 160 million acres of forest across North America, maintaining strict requirements for endorsement. SFI promotes sustainable forestry, certified and licensed woodlot management, conservation of critical wildlife habitats on all suppliers’ lands and a chain-of-custody certification so buyers know how much certified fiber is in a specific product. SFI standards include measures to protect water quality, biodiversity, habitats, species at risk and forests with exceptional conservation value, and the program’s fiber sourcing certification addresses the 90 percent of the world’s forests that are not certified to make sure the wood was legally and responsibly sourced.
