The United States forestry and forest products industry employs nearly a million people, making it one of the largest employers in manufacturing, but there’s a lot more to it than just logging and sawmill positions. There are tons of opportunities to be found in all facets of the industry for people with experience in a wide variety of fields, including woodworking, marketing, tech, sales, finances, human resources, sustainability and more. There are even recruiting companies focusing specifically on wood product jobs, finding talent for companies working in biomass energy, wood pellets, cabinets, manufactured wood products and furniture, just as a few examples.
In 2018, those numbers are expected to grow. According to a few recent studies highlighted by Woodworking Network, wood secondary products industries like the wood components market are on an upward trend, and demand in the moulding and trim segment is projected to grow 5.7% annually to $5.8 billion in 2020 thanks to new housing construction and remodeling. The wood pellets market is projected to grow to $20 billion by 2023. With wood taking off on the architectural innovations front, we can likely expect overall demand for wood building materials to rise as well.
