Top 25 Jobs That Don’t Require College Degrees Include Lumber Manufacturing

At least four of the top 25 jobs that don’t require college degrees are in the lumber industry, according to a new report by SkillPointe. Coming in at number 6 is carpenter, for those with woodworking proclivities, while industrial machinery mechanic, heavy equipment operator and machinist helped round out the list. The report is based on a proprietary analysis of current salaries, available job openings, future growth and interest among job seekers.

forklift driver job

Other jobs on the list include software developer, systems analyst, electrician, truck driver, IT support specialist, auto mechanic, information security analyst and welder. These high-growth jobs represent 2.3 million job openings in 2021, and construction has the most jobs on the list of any industry, with even more expected growth in 2022 and beyond. Surprisingly, high-growth energy jobs didn’t feature due to a lower number of job openings compared to larger industries.

This list of high-growth jobs can help those looking to change careers make smart decisions based on real-world data. It’s easy to assume that you need to go back to school for a four-year degree or higher to secure a well-paying, stable job in a new industry, but local training for skilled trade and non-degree professions is available at community colleges and trade schools, and many are entry level as well.

“While retail and hospitality have faced significant challenges related to the Covid-19 pandemic, other industries still offer amazing opportunities with lots of growth, strong salaries, and future job security, all without a college degree,” said Todd Wilson, SkillPointe Founder. “These jobs do require some training, but fast-track options are available at local community colleges and trade schools for a fraction of the cost of a four-year program. Employer apprenticeships are also a great option.”

“You Wood” Campaign Aims to Draw Young People into Wood Industry

Careers in wood industry

No matter who you are, there’s a place for you in the wood industry. That’s the message the Wood Industry Resource Collaborative is trying to send with “You Wood,” a new career awareness campaign designed to draw fresh talent into the field. Developed by a group of industry trade associations in partnership with Nashville-based Industrial Strength Marketing, the campaign offers career resource information, quizzes, links to educational resources and a calendar of events.

“Why Wood? Wood is responsible for 4% of the world economy,” the website states. “Wood is vital to the global economy in ways we don’t often notice. From utility poles to anti-tumor treatments extracted from trees, manufactured wood products and processes contribute to reduced fossil fuel dependency and create healthier, safer and more sustainable communities. The wood industry is vibrant and growing, driven by a desire for renewable sources and higher quality products. Tools and automation have helped make many new careers possible in engineering, manufacturing, design and education.”

Inviting visitors to get to know the wood industry, the website lays out career possibilities in a variety of areas, including flooring, cabinetry, architectural millwork and technology & machinery. Though the campaign focuses mostly on various types of woodworking and crafting, the lumber and forestry industries are a natural extension. It’s mainly geared towards high school students and young people in their 20s and 30s seeking a career change, including military veterans.

A 2020 study by the Wood Industry Resource Collaborative found that over 70 percent of all respondents had no awareness of wood industry careers, but 23 percent would consider choosing one.

“We realize how critical it is to increase awareness of our industry and the career opportunities which exist for both students and those seeking a career change where they can utilize skills they’ve already developed in the workplace,” said WMIA president and CEO Larry Hoffer. “It is our objective that the You Wood website will serve as a portal for those unfamiliar with the wood industry to learn more and begin exploration of their wood industry-related career journey.”

This Week in Wood: Lumber Demand will Remain Strong in 2019, Experts Predict

Layman's Lumber Guide

Though things may get off to a slightly slow start in January, lumber industry experts say demand will likely pick up in the Spring of 2019. ProSales reports that consultant Matt Layman, the creator of Layman’s Lumber Guide, is feeling optimistic about the upcoming season even as economists ponder a possible recession in the overall economy.

“According to Layman, the lumber market will trade indecisively in the penultimate week of 2018, leading to impatient buyers and curtailed production. This will create higher lumber prices during January 2019 and lower builder lumber demand. However this weak projected month will not be enough to prevent a stronger start to the spring months next year.”

Layman also predicts that lumber demand will be very strong in Q2 and Q3 “compared to a noisy and volatile first quarter.”

Sawmills have been running at high capacity as buyers consume more and more wood, leading to higher lumber prices. Q3 of 2018 experienced a slight slowdown after an unexpectedly robust Q2.

Meanwhile, contractors are ending 2018 on a high note and feeling cautiously optimistic about the calendar year to come. Spending growth has been strong and well-balanced among residential, private nonresidential and public projects. Employment i the industry rose 4.9% between October 2017 and October 2018, and more than three quarters of the 2,552 firms surveyed by the Associated General Contractors of America expect to add workers over the coming year.

The biggest challenge, it appears, is finding workers, particularly hourly craft workers. Ken Simonson, chief economist for Associated General Contractors, says the unemployment rate for jobseekers with recent construction experience dropped to 3.6% in October, the lowest October rate in a series dating to 2000.

This Week in Wood: Conserving Working Forests Supports Rural Families

conserving forests

As we recently reported, the more the public demands wood and other forest products, the more our forests grow – and, as it turns out, that growth supports rural families, too. When terrain for logging disappears due to suburbanization of historically wooded properties, jobs disappear along with it. As The Huffington Post reports, the number of logging jobs has declined dramatically over the last 20 years along with the milling companies that once provided them, leaving vast tracts of forest in the hands of investor groups and private-equity funds.

How those landowners then sell or lease the properties – and two whom – depends on what will net them the greatest profits. That often means tearing down forests to build oversized vacation homes instead of preserving them. A group called The Conservation Fund hopes to change that, and recently purchased 23,053 acres of forest on the borders of New York, Vermont and Massachusetts to help ensure they remain the backbone of the rural economies nearby.

The Conservation Fund has preserved nearly 500,000 acres of privately owned forested land over the last 20 years, through a process known as conservation easement. The fund agrees to buy the land from investors, then adds restrictions to the deeds excluding development. The new terms allow activities like recreation and sustainable logging, where foresters select specific trees to fell and lumbermen like Gale carefully cut them and drag them out. The Conservation Fund then sells the land to new owners, who agree to maintain the easement’s terms of use, and uses proceeds of the sales to create easements in other parts of the country.

…But cities naturally expand over time and zoning policies can, in theory, be changed to accommodate housing that is more affordable. In rural, wooded areas, the gentrification process can be economically devastating. That’s why privately owned forests like the ones the Conservation Fund buys welcome sustainable forestry, which helps clear out dead wood and make the forests less dense. Forestry-related industries currently provide 2.7 million American jobs and contribute $112 billion to the U.S. economy each year, according to the Land Trust Alliance, a conservation group.
