Eastern White Pine Staircase Brings Scandinavian Style to a Minnesota Retreat

Meteek North Shore Stairway

“The divine is in the detail,” says Minnesota-based builder Meteek & Co. of the stunning staircase standing at the center of the North Shore Retreat. Hand-crafted of locally grown and sustainably harvested Eastern White Pine by Minnesota Timber and Millwork (MTM), the staircase was custom-made for the space and features a delicate stencil pattern drawing inspiration from Scandinavian scroll work design, a motif that is echoed throughout the home.

“Each of these giant white pine treads measures 4 inches thick and 12 inches deep,” says Meteek. “We used Rubio Monocoat in clear to preserve the golden hue of the pine.”

The wood was harvested from Northern Minnesota forests and sawn in the historic Rajala Bigfork sawmill before being dried slowly in the plant’s own kilns. Rajala Companies is the longest continually running sawmill in the state. We previously wrote about Jack Rajala, the “legendary lumberman” who planted 3.5 million Eastern White Pine trees in Minnesota, and the wonderful legacy he left behind.

Meteek gives us a peek at the rest of the home, too, which is cozy as can be. They used a mix of modern and classic Scandinavian design to fit out the interiors with warm woods and hand-finished metal accents. The stunning hearth is framed by a stone mural created by stone artisan Larry Beaumont of Beaumont Stoneworks in Duluth.

6 Sculptural Tree Trunk & Log Staircases to Spur Your Imagination

Rustic stairs that retain the feel of a living tree act as a sculptural centerpiece, bringing the sense of connection to nature into a building’s interior. While they’re most often found in log cabins, timber frame homes and tree houses, tree trunk and log-based staircases look incredible integrated with all sorts of architectural styles. These 6 examples might just give you some ideas for your next project.

The rugged beauty pictured above can be found in a two-story coastal Eastern White Pine log cabin in Trinity, Texas, which is currently for sale.

The ‘Signature’ spiral stair by Stairmeister Log Works features a log column with an optional root flare intact at the base for a treehouse-like effect. The company also builds circular and straight-run stairs around rustic tree trunks.

Carved right into a single log, this steep staircase at the ‘Crazy House’ in Vietnam probably wouldn’t pass muster with building inspectors in the United States, but it’s an interesting idea.

Wooden Wonders: You’ve Never Seen a Staircase Quite Like This

wood staircase 2

This shockingly beautiful staircase stands as a sculptural centerpiece within the Atrium office tower in Tel Aviv, Israel, with spiraling steps leading up to a tornado-shaped deck. Designed by architect Oded Halaf and built by Tomer Gelfand, the structure is not just a work of art in its unusual shape, it’s an example of how high-tech design and traditional woodworking can come together for modern usage.

29,527 feet of raw poplar were cut using a CNC machine to form a series of arches, which were assembled on-site into the final shape. Navigating it isn’t meant to be as simple as taking a functional set of stairs to get from one level of a building to the next; it’s an experience in itself, taking in the whole structure from a new angle with every step.

The firm Tomer Gelfland uses advanced design and simulation software to create digital models that calculate exactly how much wood is needed, and the precise angles at which it will need to be cut and assembled. This information is fed to the CNC machine to make the cuts, but the wood is finished by hand. You can view the construction and assembly process at the firm’s website.

This gorgeous project is just a peek into the future of wood as a sustainable, durable and incredibly versatile material that will be increasingly utilized in ultramodern settings.

Vertical Pine Planks Create Stunning Spiral Staircase in Dome Home

An unusual arrangement of pine boards forms a spiraling core for a sculptural staircase that stands as the centerpiece of a dome home in China. Designed by British furniture manufacturers Timothy Oulton, the cylindrical home and the charming handmade village that surrounds it are made primarily of reclaimed materials. Taking its inspiration from spiderwebs, the structure itself is a stunning model of wooden craftsmanship, but the staircase takes the cake.

Graduating in height all the way up to the railing of the loft, the vertically-installed pine supports a set of floating treads that spiral from the living area up to a quiet workspace. The result is visually stunning from every angle, but especially when gazing down from the upper level.

The design team used custom steel plates and fittings to support the staircase as well as the loft, which takes up half the footprint of the house. Perpendicular planks punctuated by curving vertical ribs create a series of concentric circles on the ceiling, drawing the eye upwards.
